This was the second week in total that we’ve been able to go to school for five days in a row. First quarter is almost done. Seriously. We’ve missed over a week for hurricane BS - because Florence was a big threat and Michael knocked out power to half the district .
Kids were little maniacs on Friday because both the Math and ELA assessments fell that day. By 2:45 they were bouncing off the walls. By 3:20 I had to raise my voice. I’m starting Monday with a refresher on what it means to show respect - and I’m going to start carrying a discipline clipboard to make notes.
Anyway, I came home Friday to a condolence card from the vet’s office. My next tattoo will be Scooter’s paw print.
It means a lot to me that all the vet techs that worked with Scooter wrote notes. Dr. Mac even got choked up when administering the medication to euthanize him.
Ugh.

About 20 years ago, my parents put my dog down while I was at school (7th grade), so I didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye; I didn’t even know he was sick! I cried so much and so hard my pillow was soaked through.
It so profoundly hurt that I stopped liking or caring about animals completely after that. It just hurts too much when they die. It’s honestly bled a bit into human relationships too, it’s impossible for me to be heavily invested in someone emotionally anymore. Every funeral I’ve attended since then, I’ve shed not a single tear.
My innocence died that day along with my dog.
You have my sympathies.

Friday, when I was about to leave school, a co-worker informed me of a case of bullying in my class. Some boys picked the easiest vis´ctim to make fun of. So I round them up, yell at them for a bit and then threaten disciplinary action should this bs continue.
After I got home, and cleaned the appartment to blow off some steam, another co-worker calls me and tells me that in their whatsapp group group some students sexually threatened another girl, forced her to steal etc.... Talking to the parents tomorrow.
Monday is going to be soooooo much fun.
Ugh.
There’s good days and worse ones. Still one of the best jobs in the world, IMHO.

I feel you, man. I teach at a private school and we were off basically the entire month of September for religious holidays. It was a bit of a nightmare. Sorry about your pup. I’m still trying to come up with some artwork for my girl, Lola. I was able to find a patch that looks exactly like her in sugar skull form, so for now she’s will me when I ride.

In education, every day is a good day, and some days are better days. And some days are so good that tomorrow can only be better .
The first sentence, a jaded old educator shared with me right after I started. At 38 years of age... The second sentence I came up with as a corollary to the first.

You’re a teacher ?
I worked as a database manager for a religious nonprofit and we got lots of days off, too.

Thanks for sharing that. My wife has dogs and I purposefully retain a measure of detachment from them because they are animals and might need to be put down some day and replaced. Devoted, faithful animals they are and at times, destructive, but animals.

For now. Been doing it for about six years now.

Teaching what? We have a young SJW language arts teacher that I am hoping won’t turn into one of those
insufferable
SJW language arts teachers, the ones who are dismissive of anyone with an outside view and who think they are the only people capable of being sensitive and they’re just so
busy

Chemistry, biology and environmental science. I’ve always taught part time while managing my family’s print shop, but we shut down a bout a year and a half ago, and I didn’t want to stay in the printing industry.
Just applied to grad school to get an MS in Environmental Resource Management with a focus on hydrology. I’ll probably still teach part time if I can when I’m done.

Some days all you can do is ride it out.

I have that school bus model at home in the box ready for me to assemble. I need to learn something about how to mask and paint it before I begin.
